2017 Swimming and Diving Memo – October 13
It is hard to believe we are quickly approaching the halfway point of October and two weeks away from the regional diving and swimming meets. As the homestretch approaches, there are a few things that I’d like to touch on.
Regional Assignments Posted: The regional team assignments were posted on October 6. Please click here if you do not know where your team is competing. Regional diving tournaments are taking place at four sites on Thursday, October 26 at 5:00 p.m. while swimming meets are at six sites. All regional swimming meets will begin at noon on Saturday, October 28.
State Swimming and Diving Ticket Procedures: The ticketing procedures for the 2017 State Swimming and Diving Meet will change this year. The IGHSAU is teaming up with GoFan to give swimming and diving fans the ability to purchase tickets to the state meet in advance on their mobile devices. Beginning October 23, spectators will be able to purchase tickets to the State Swimming and Diving Meet through the IGHSAU and GoFan websites. Individuals will be allowed to purchase up to eight tickets for both Friday and Saturday sessions prior to the State Meet. You must have e-tickets purchased to enter the YMCA/YWCA gym when it opens at 9:00 a.m. for Saturday’s swim meet. Regular tickets (tickets not purchased electronically) will also be available for purchase at the north gate at the Marshalltown YMCA/YWCA at 4:00 p.m. Friday and 10:30 a.m. Saturday. More information regarding e-ticketing will be available prior to tickets being available on Oct. 23.

#TicketPunched: The IGHSAU has a fun social media campaign to promote state qualifiers in our fall activities. Each regional site will be provided “tickets” that will be given to each regional champion who has “punched their ticket” to the State Meet. We are asking each team (coach, manager, teammate, etc.) to take a photo of their champion with their ticket to post on your social media platforms (Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram). Please identify the athlete and event with the hashtag #TicketPunched and #IGHSAU. We will repost the photo on the IGHSAU social media sites (feel free to email photos to me at firstname.lastname@example.org). We are trying to do this with all of our state qualifying champions and teams as a way to showcase the Iowa Girl during all of our fall championship series.
Officiating: As all of you know, high school athletics all across the nation are suffering from a shortfall of officials. Swimming is not immune from this shortage. We are fortunate that there are some new people that are beginning to officiate. My plea to coaches: remember to encourage and support these new officials. If we are helpful and constructive with officials as they learn, we will retain them. If we fail to do this, the future of our sport is jeopardized as there will come a time when there are not enough officials to work meets. Please also pass this along to your fans as well. Officials cite verbal altercations with fans, parents and coaches as the number one reason they are walking away from the profession. Let’s make sure we are doing everything we can to keep them in the game.
Thanks for all that you do for the Iowa Girl. Good luck the rest of the season and in the regional meets.
