If schools return on May 1, the following dates have been set for practice and competition:

  • Practice Begins:  May 18
  • Competition Begins:  June 1
  • Pitchers and Catchers:  Contact may begin May 1

This change was made in consultation with the Softball Advisory Committee and reflects the changes in the spring sports.  Many of our member schools have multi-sport athletes who compete in spring sports and softball.  We need to help those student athletes compete in both without an increase in the overlap of seasons, just as we have in setting our previous dates.

Please make note that the same restriction for unlimited contact for pitchers and catchers continue to apply on May 1:

No batting practice, no hitting of ground balls, no position coverage and no drills may be performed by pitchers or catchers with coaches present. Pitchers and catchers may stretch, run and play catch (short and long distance). Catchers are there for the sole purpose of catching your pitcher(s).

Updates on permissible activities for video sessions

May our coach conduct training sessions via video conferencing software (Zoom, Google Hangout, FaceTime, etc.)?

Since we are using our coach-athlete contact rule as a model for what we’re prohibiting now, this would be prohibited. This means no live and/or group demonstration or specific instruction; no live coach-directed instruction is permitted. Spring sport (only) coaches may share (including links to) articles and individual workout videos (including coach-created). Coaches maynot require athletes to complete workouts nor require athletes to report workouts completed.

Coaches may conduct video conferencing for the purpose of connecting with their team, providing motivational materials, etc. but no skill instruction or related materials are permissible.

May our strength and conditioning coach conduct training sessions via video conferencing software (Zoom, Google Hangout, FaceTime, etc.)?

Similar to guidance for spring sport coaches, no live and/or group demonstration or specific instruction is permitted. A strength and conditioning coach may share (including links to) articles and individual workout videos (including coach-created). None of these may be sport-specific and must be shared with all students in the school; not select students.  Coaches may notrequire athletes to complete workouts nor require athletes to report workouts completed.
