Western Dubuque is getting another chance to try
to take down Harlan.
The second-ranked Bobcats led almost all the way
in a 47-38 semifinal victory over Sioux City Bishop Heelan
and will play No. 1 Harlan in the Class 4A championship game at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Harlan beat Western Dubuque 55-51 in last year's title game, which marked the
first time the Bobcats had reached the finals since winning it all in a
one-class tournament in 1987.
Both finalists are 25-0 and Harlan has a 51-game
winning streak.
Megan Maahs led the
Bobcats with 15 points, Morgan Pitz scored 10 and
Rose Simon-Ressler had nine points and 10 rebounds.
Simon-Ressler, leading
the team with a 13.2 average, didn't get many shots but hit a couple of key
ones in the fourth quarter.
With her team leading 33-29, Simon-Ressler drove into the lane for a pull-up jumper to give
the Bobcats a little breathing room. She hit another jumper from about the same
spot, this one with 3:14 remaining, after Heelan had drawn
to 35-32.
It was all free throws for the Bobcats after
that. They made 10 of 12 from the line to wrap it up, Pitz
hitting four and Simon-Ressler adding three.
Bishop Heelan (21-4), a
state champion in 2008 and 2010, was denied a fourth trip to the title game.
Grace Hanno led the Crusaders with 10 points, Megan Todd scored nine, Tristan
Beaulieu had eight and Taylor Beaulieu seven.
Western Dubuque committed 19 turnovers, but
offset that by shooting 51.6 percent and holding Heelan
to 33.3 percent shooting. They also outrebounded Heelan
33-18.
