West Des Moines Valley's record-setting season
will continue for at least one more game.
The top-ranked Tigers led almost from the start
and rolled past unranked Mason City 65-42 to open Class 4A play.
Sophomore Hannah Fuller led the way with 21
points and Missouri State recruit Grace Vander Weide
scored 15 to go with four rebounds and two assists as the Tigers improved to
22-2. With this victory, they now have nine wins against teams that qualified
for the state tournament.
Vander Weide,
the 5A leader in assists, was at her best in the third quarter to help Valley
break the game open. She sparked a 15-4 run with seven points, including a
layup after a nifty behind-the-back dribble.
The big run stretched the Tigers' lead to 45-24
and all but secured the victory.
Makenzie
Meyer, a junior who has committed to the University of Iowa, led Mason City
with 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Marci Wolters
added 13 points for the youthful Mohawks (15-9), who started only one senior.
They upset fourth-ranked Ankeny Centennial to earn its state tournament trip
and should be a contender again next season
Valley, which reached the tournament in
back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history, moves on to a semifinal game at noon on Friday.
