Dani
Craig's clutch shooting was just what Iowa City West needed in a battle of
former state champions.
Craig hit three big 3-pointers, including the
game-winner with 14 seconds remaining, to help the fifth-ranked Women of Troy
beat No. 6 Southeast Polk 43-40 in a first-round Class 5A game.
West (22-2) struggled early, fell behind by 14
points and found itself down 25-13 with under a minute to play in the first
half. A 12-0 run spanning halftime got the Women of Troy back in it and the two
teams went back and forth the rest of the way.
Southeast Polk (18-6) fell behind by five points,
then rallied to go up 40-39 when Ashton Donels drove
down the right side of the lane and banked in a left-handed shot -- she's
right-handed -- with 58 seconds left.
West then worked the ball until Craig got it on
the right wing. She was open and buried the 3-pointer for a 42-40 lead with 22
seconds left. Donels then missed a driving shot, a scramble for the ball resulted in a jump ball and
possession went to West. The Rams had to foul and Craig sank a free throw for
the final point.
Craig finished 3-for-7 from 3-point range and led
West with 13 points. Mikaela
Morgan had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Women of Troy and Grace Tafolla scored six.
Sierra Mitchell led Southeast Polk with 12 points
on four 3-point baskets, Donels scored 10 and Shelby Uhl had nine. Jacey Huinker had 10 rebounds and six assists for the Rams, who
made the tournament for the fifth straight year. They won the title in 2013 and
finished second last year.
Craig also played a key role in the run that got
West back into the game. She banked in a straight-on 3 just before halftime to
cut the lead to 25-18, converted a three-point play early in the third quarter
and gave West its first lead of the game at 30-29 with a 3 from the top of the
key.
West, the 2012 state champion, will play
top-ranked West Des Moines Valley in the semifinals at noon Friday.
