Waukee is going where no girls basketball team from the school has gone before. The Warriors are headed to the state championship game.

The second-ranked Warriors contained Dowling Catholic stars Audrey Faber and Becca Hittner and beat the defending state champions 42-32 to claw its way into the Class 5A title game.

Junior Reilly Jacobson led Waukee (23-2) with 10 points and 13 rebounds and the Warriors got contributions from everyone else in the lineup in gaining a berth against top-ranked West Des Moines Valley in the championship game at 8 p.m. Saturday. The two met during the regular season, with Valley winning 72-66.

Anna Kollmorgan addded nine points for Waukee, while Andie Mataloni, Carlie Littlefield and Ellie Cavanaugh each scored seven. Cavanaugh also grabbed eight rebounds, handed out three assists and made two steals.

One of her assists came when she dribbled behind her back in transition and fed Mataloni for a layup that made it 30-24 with 1:34 left in the third quarter. Mataloni followed with a 3-pointer less than a minute later for a 33-24 lead and that was more than enough for the Warriors to hold on through the fourth quarter.

Third-ranked Dowling (21-4) so often has found a way to pull out a victory in tough situations. But the Maroons struggled to make shots all afternoon and couldn't come up with the plays they needed in this one.

Dowling got the lead down to 33-28 on Faber's free throw in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. But the Maroons got no closer and Waukee scored its final seven points on free throws -- four by Cavanaugh and three by Littlefield.

Faber, averaging 18.9 points, scored eight and grabbed eight rebounds in her final game for the Maroons. She'll play at Creighton next season.

Kennedy Childers and Amber Gierstorf also scored eight points and Gierstorf grabbed 13 rebounds. Hittner finished with six points and five rebounds.
