Cedar
Rapids Xavier emerged from a wild fourth quarter against Grinnell to claim a
berth in the Class 4A semifinals.
Sixth-ranked
Xavier let most of a 12-point lead slip away before holding behind some clutch
shooting to turn back third-ranked Grinnell 60-55.
Grinnell
twice pulled within two points and then cut the lead to one, but could never
get the lead because the Saints kept answering with a big score of their own.
Senior
guard Kiana Stanek, who came into the game averaging
7.6 points, led Xavier with 22 points. Lexi Noonan added 12 points for the
Saints and Kyle Brown scored 10.
Junior forward Sienna Durr
was outstanding for Grinnell, scoring 26 points on 9-for-14 shooting, making
all eight of her free throws and pulling down 11 rebounds. Kyra Hungerford
added eight points for the Tigers and Kameron Moore scored seven.
Xavier led 43-31 going into the fourth
quarter and appeared to be in control. But Grinnell scored the first seven
points of the final period and Xavier found itself in a battle until the end.
A key
moment occurred with Xavier clinging to a 49-47 lead with under a minute to
play. Stanek got the ball on the right wing and, with
her body twisted at an odd angle, hit an off-balance 3-pointer with 1:40 left
for a 52-47 lead.
Then,
after Grinnell cut the lead to 54-53 on Hungerford's 3 with 25 seconds
remaining, Stanek sank two free throws, Noonan
followed with another pair and the Saints had the margin they needed to move
on.
Xavier
takes an 18-6 record into a semifinal at 10 a.m. Friday against eighth-ranked
North Scott. Grinnell winds up 19-5.
