NOTES
Havighurst Is Having Quite A Meet
West Des Moines Valley’s Emma Havighurst keeps outdoing herself in the 100 hurdles. Havighurst lowered her own all-time best in the event to 13.62 in winning her Class 4A preliminary heat. That comes after she anchored Valley to an all-time best in the prelims of the shuttle hurdle relay on Thursday. She ran her leg in that race in a blazing 13.40. Her Valley teammate, Morgan Karr, moved to No. 8 on the all-time list when she won her preliminary heat in 14.10\
Denton Delivers Again For St. Albert
Lili Denton’s teammates gave her a nice lead for her anchor carry in the Class 1A distance medley relay and it’s a good thing, too, because Nashua-Plainfield’s Kadence Huck was closing fast. Denton, the 3000 winner on Thursday, held on to give her Council Bluffs St. Albert team the victory in 4:05.87. Huck, the 400 winner on Thursday, closed in 2:07.96 after getting the baton in eighth place to get her team into second at 4:08.69. Denton ran her 800 leg in 2:10.54. It’s the first relay title for St. Albert for the Saintes since winning the DMR in 2009.
This Was One Fast Race
Cedar Falls broke into the all-time top 20 in the distance medley relay and finished only fourth in the Class 4A race. That’s how fast it was. Waukee Northwest won in 3:59.67, a meet record and No. 3 on the state’s all-time list. Runner-up Ankeny finished in 4:00.10, which ranks fourth, and Pleasant Valley came in third in 4:01.01, which puts the Spartans at No. 8 on the all-time list. Cedar Falls’ fourth-place time of 4:03.41 ranks 18th.
Wolves Pack Away Another Title
Waukee picked up another victory – and another record – with a blistering run in the 4A 4x200 relay. The Wolves won that race in 1:38.55, which improved on their all-time best in the event. It was Northwest’s third straight victory in that race and No. 3 runner Aunya Van Zetten has been on all three championship units. Southeast Polk finished second in 1:39.89, which is fifth on the all-time list. Third-place finisher Waukee goes on the list at No. 22 with its time of 1:41.23.
Pekin Thrower Regains Championship Form
Pekin’s Anna Hadley regained her title in the Class 1A discus and she did so in record-fashion. Hadley threw 150-9 to break a record that had stood since 2004. The Pekin junior won the event as a freshman in 2023 and was the runner-up last year, when she won the shot put. She finished sixth in the shot on Thursday.
Finally, Another Win For CAM
Sophomore Ada Hansen gave the folks at CAM a long-awaited chance to cheer a state champion. Hansen raced to a decisive victory in the Class 1A 400 hurdles, finishing in 1:02.97. It’s just the second state title in a running event for CAM. The other also came in the 100 hurdles, by Marne Harris in 1993.
No. 2 Helped Make Her No. 1
Abby Mecklenburg’s second-best mark helped her repeat her title in the Class 4A long jump. The Linn-Mar junior went 19-3 ¾ for the win, a jump matched by Johnston’s Jaida Bell. But Mecklenburg’s second-best jump measured 19-1 ½ and that made the difference. Bell’s No. 2 jump came in at 18-8 ¼. Mecklenburg is the state’s all-time leader in the long jump at 20-8 ¼.
