NOTES
First Record Comes Quickly
A slew of records are expected this weekend and it didn’t take long to get the first one. Just 23 minutes into the meet, ADM, Adel broke the class 3A record in the shuttle hurdle relay. With Elise Coghlan and Josi Dufoe running the final two legs – they rank 1-2 in 3A for the 100 hurdles – ADM sped to a time of 1:02.61. That easily broke the record of 1:03.13 that Pella set in 2016. ADM is the defending champion in the event.
Steines Is Still The Champion
Tipton’s Noelle Steines joined an elite group with her victory in the Class 2A 3000 (9:53.95). The senior standout became just the sixth runner to win the 3000 four times at state. This was her second title with Tipton in 2A after winning two 1A crowns with Calamus-Wheatland. It’s the ninth state championship overall for Steines, who will run at Bradley next season. She also is one of just two runners to win four cross country championships.
Ferebee Finishes First Again
Pella’s Marissa Ferebee had to work to repeat her title in the Class 3A 3000. Ferebee battled Harlan’s Lindsey Sonderman throughout the race before taking the lead for good on the backstretch of the final lap and pulling away in the last 200 meters. She finished in 9:51.56, well off her career best but good enough for another title. Sonderman was clocked in 9:54.31.
Wrestling Champ Takes Discus Title
From the wrestling match to the discus ring, it doesn’t matter for Mount Vernon’s Libby Dix. She’s a state champion in both venues. Dix pulled off a major upset in winning the Class 3A discus, beating two-time champion Charlee Morton of Hampton-Dumont/CAL. Dix threw 148-10 to claim the title. Dubuque Wahlert Catholic’s Olivia Hilby was second at 145-3 and Morton took third at 139-1 – 14 feet short of her career best. Dix was the Class 1A champion at 190 pounds at the state wrestling meet in February.
The Streak Goes On
Van Meter ran away from the field to extend its winning streak in the Class 2A 4x800 relay. With three runners back from last year’s team, the Bulldogs ran 9:34.89 to win the race for the fifth straight year. Laura Streck, Lizzy McCann and Emma McCoy all ran on last year’s winning team and McCoy also ran on the 2023 title-winning quartet. Tri-Center finished second in 9:38.92.
It’s A Three-Peat For Gilbert
Gilbert’s Sarah Feddersen outran Marion’s Kyra Cordes on the final carry to give the Tigers their third straight title in the Class 3A 4x800 relay with a record-setting time. They finished in 9:14.60 for their fifth championship in the event since 2015. Mount Vernon-Lisbon set the old record of 9:17.72 in 2010. Feddersen, leadoff runner Keira Anderson and No. 3 runner Sophia Bleich all have been part of the three straight titles. Marion finished second in 9:18.65. Gilbert’s time is No. 14 on the state’s all-time list.
Fast Times For Assumption Sprinter
Two races, two records for Davenport Assumption’s Kelly Grobstich. And that was just in the preliminaries. Grobstich first set a record in the Class 3A 200, speeding to a 24.38 clocking in her preliminary race. She returned to the Blue Oval a couple of hours later for the prelims in the 100 and won her heat in 11.81 for another record.
Grobstich could not do it a third time, however. Clear Lake’s Reese Brownlee was too fast. Brownlee won the Class 3A 400 for the third straight year, running 54.84 to move from 14th to 10th on the state’s all-time list. Grobstich was second in 55.50, which ties for 18th on the all-time list. It’s the sixth state championship for Brownlee, who’s also the defending champion in the 400 hurdles and long jump.
North Polk Jumper Ends Three-Peat Try
North Polk’s Reese Wagner ended London Warmuth’s winning streak in the Class 3A high jump. Wagner cleared 5-8 to win the title, then missed three times at 5-9 ¼ in an effort to break Alexis Conaway’s meet record. Warmuth, a senior at ADM who had won the event the past two years, cleared 5-7 to finish second.
A Reason To Celebrate
Ogden’s Taydem Graden has a special reason to celebrate her Class 2A long lump title. With her mark of 18-3 ½, Graden became the first girl from Ogden to win a field event at the state meet. It’s just the second state title in any event for the Bulldogs, who won the Class 1A shuttle hurdle relay in 2000.
