Central Lyon showed off its balance and strength around basket as it rolled into the Class 2A semifinals.

Aubrey Metzger dominated inside with 18 points and 12 rebounds and four teammates scored at least six points to power the fifth-seeded Lions past No. 4 seed North Mahaska 59-34 to complete the second day of the 2025 state tournament.

Metzger, a 6-foot-2 senior, made her first seven shots, all on putbacks or layups, and finished 7-for-10 against a team that had no answer for her inside presence. She also blocked five shots and handed out an assist.

Freshman Taylor Rypkema was solid off the bench with 13 points on 4-for-5 shooting and five rebounds. Georgie Oedekoven added nine points, Danika Hoogendoorn had seven points and six assists and Shyanne Struckman contributed six points, two assists and two steals.

The Lions finished with 12 steals in all, leading to an 18-3 edge in points off turnovers. Central Lyon also outrebounded North Mahaska 43-21 and piled up 21 second-chance points from 17 offensive rebounds.

Brecklyn Schilling and Regan Grewe scored nine points each to lead North Mahaska (22-3), which was in the tournament for the fifth time and won the Class 1A title in 2012. Sydney Andersen added seven points for the Warhawks, who shot just 32 percent for the game and were 2-for-12 from deep.

Central Lyon took control at the start and never let up, jumping to an 8-0 lead after getting two layups and a putback in the game’s first 35 seconds. The Lions led by as many as 15 in the first half, were up 31-21 at halftime and saw their lead fall below double figures only twice after that.

Leading 49-34 early in the fourth quarter, the Lions scored the game’s final 10 points to win going away.

 Central Lyon is in the semifinals for the third time in four years. The Lions lost in the state championship game in 2022 and 2023 and were eliminated in the opening round last year.
