Kuemper Catholic 25-25-25-25, Red Oak 27-17-16-22

CORALVILLE — Kuemper Catholic earned a spot in the Class 3A semifinals Tuesday with a 3-1 victory over Red Oak, winning by scores of 25-27, 25-17, 25-16, 25-22 at the Iowa State Volleyball Tournament.

The Knights (32-2) bounced back after dropping the opening set with a balanced offensive attack and strong defense. Mariah Heuton, Kolbi Peter and Brianna Wittrock all tallied 10 kills to lead Kuemper, while Addy Anthofer added eight kills. Setter Elsa Tiefenthaler directed the offense with 38 assists and contributed eight kills of her own.

Defensively, libero Kaylie Simons collected 25 digs to anchor the back row, while Tiefenthaler and Anthofer each added 15 digs. Kuemper also totaled 12 team blocks, with Wittrock recording five and Heuton adding four block assists.

Red Oak (38-3) was led by Jocelyn O’Neal’s 20 kills and 13 digs, while Maria Ramirez finished with 19 digs and Keely Jones added nine kills and 14 digs for the Tigers, who finish the year at 38-3.

Kuemper Catholic faces second-ranked Davenport Assumption in the Class 3A semifinals Wednesday at 2:25 p.m.
