DES MOINES, Iowa — Rock Valley’s Haevyn Ranschau regained her shooting touch at just the right time.
Ranschau misfired time after time before knocking two big 3-pointers and a jumper in the fourth quarter to send the second-seeded Rockets on their way to the Class 2A semifinals with a 43-31 victory over Iowa City Regina Catholic.
Tipping off Day 3 of the 2026 tournament, Rock Valley won at state for the first time since IGHSAU Hall of Famer Deb Remmerde led the school to the last of its three consecutive titles in 2003. The Rockets improved to 23-2 and will play again at 11:45 Friday morning.
It was a struggle at times to get there.
Rock Valley was clinging to a 29-27 lead heading into the final period after shooting 1-for-11 in the third quarter and Ranschau was 0-for-6 from 3-point range. But she buried a trey 15 seconds into the quarter and that seemed to pick up the entire team as the Rockets finished the game on a 14-4 run to win going away.
Ranschau hit another triple at the 2:16 mark and followed with a short jump shot to stretch the lead to 39-29 and all but seal the victory. She finished with 15 points to lead the Rockets and though she went just 5-for-20, including 3-for-15 from deep, she delivered when her team needed a spark.
Caydence Harmsen added 12 points for Rock Valley, which had lost three straight state tourney games, and Ranschau’s sister Hudsyn scored 10. Natalie Leusink gave the Rockets a strong inside presence with 14 rebounds, five points, a block and a steal.
Another key for Rock Valley was keeping Regina’s sophomore star, Addie McLaughlin in check in the second half. She finished with 16 points but had only four after halftime. No one else scored more than four for the Regals, who made only five of 24 shots in the second half and shot 25 percent for the game.
Rock Valley didn’t shoot it much better, finishing at 27.7 percent. But Rockets compensated by getting to the free throw line, making 12 of 18 while Regina was just 3-of-7.
