Raccoon River-Northwest owns the lead in the Class 2A team race after getting the 2025 state tournament under way with an impressive array of wrestling at Coralville’s Xtream Arena.
RRNW wrestlers earned bonus points in every match they won and finished the session with 80 points while sending four to Friday’s semifinals and keeping five others in contention for podium finishes on the consolation side of the bracket.
Ankeny is third with 63 points and is followed by Southeast Polk with 56, Lewis Central with 50 ½ and Waverly-Shell Rock with 49.
This is the third year the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union has sponsored wrestling and the first year with classes. Class 1A action begins later today.
RRNW, a combination of Waukee, Waukee Northwest, ADM and Van Meter, went 18-7 in two rounds of championship bracket competition and the first two rounds of consolation matches. Of those 18 wins, 13 came on pins, three on major decisions and two by technical falls.
Among those advancing was two-time state champions Katie Biscoglia, who recorded two first-period pins to raise her record to 56-1. She is wrestling at 105 pounds now after winning the first two IGHSAU titles at 100.
Cedar Falls wrestlers racked up 10 pins and three technical falls as five moved on to the semifinals and one survived on the consolation side. Ankeny also will have five semifinalists, Waverly-Shell Rock advanced four and Southeast Polk and Lewis Central each sent three to the semis.
Biscoglia is among eight former champions in the 2A field and all remain in contention to win again. Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Mackenzie Childress, who was injured last season after winning the title at 125 in 2023, was especially impressive, pinning her opponents in 36 and 52 seconds at 130.
Other former champions advancing were Abigail Meyrer of Pleasant Valley at 115, Camille Schult of Waverly-Shell Rock at 125, Bella Miller of Dubuque Hempstead at 135, Skylar Slade of Southeast Polk and Mahri Manz of Lewis Central at 145 and Mackenzie Arends of Nevada at 235.
