Western Christian 25-25-25, Mount Vernon 12-10-16

CORALVILLE – Western Christian advanced to the Class 3A state volleyball semifinals for a record 25th consecutive year with a straight-set victory over defending 3A champion Mount Vernon at Xtream Arena. The Wolfpack rolled to a 25-12, 25-16, 25-20 win to improve to 38-9 on the season, while the Mustangs closed the year at 23-16.

Western Christian dominated at the net, hitting .380 as a team with 45 kills and just six errors. Morgan Kooiman led the way with 13 kills, hitting .417 and adding five blocks. Scarlett Winterfeld followed closely with 12 kills and three blocks, while Maddyn De Jager chipped in seven kills on an impressive .600 hitting percentage. The Wolfpack also benefited from strong setting by Maggie Van Schepen, who tallied 35 assists.

Mount Vernon battled in the second and third sets but couldn’t overcome Western Christian’s efficiency. Madison Hoffert led the Mustangs with five kills and 13 assists, and Hayden Gookin added six kills. The team hit .133 overall and recorded five total blocks.

Western Christian advances to face its next opponent in Wednesday's semifinals at Xtream Arena, continuing its bid for another trip to the championship match.
