Longtime Waukee and Waukee Northwest activities director Jim Duea has been hired as an assistant director by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
Duea’s primary duties will be serving as the sport administrator for cross country and track & field while aiding in eligibility cases.
Duea has served as the Activities Director at Waukee Northwest High School since the school opened in 2021. Before that, he served in the same capacity at Waukee High School for 22 years. In his 26 years as activities director, both schools enjoyed unprecedented success under his leadership, earning 53 state championships as the Waukee community experienced significant growth during his tenure.
Prior to that, Duea coached boys’ track and field at West Des Moines Valley High School, where he guided the Tigers to a state team title in 1998.
Track and Field is synonymous with the Duea family. Jim’s grandfather Ben, coached track and field at Valley Junction and Fort Dodge for nearly three decades. Jim’s father, Jim Sr., won seven indoor and outdoor state titles as the girls track and field coach at Ames and son Ben led Waukee Northwest to a pair of Class 4A state titles in 2022 and 2023, while placing second in 2024.
Duea, a native of Ames, is a 1987 graduate of Northern Iowa, where he was a track and field letterwinner. He also owns two master’s degrees from Drake University.
Duea will begin his duties with the IGHSAU in July.
