Swimming and Diving Memo – Friday, October 6

I hope this note finds all of you doing well. It seems we have blinked and here we are completing the first week of October. Hopefully, your seasons are going well. As we reach the homestretch of the regular season, I’d like to bring a few items to your attention.

Regional Assignments posted Oct. 13: Team assignments along with diving locations will be posted on the IGHSAU website next Friday (October 13).

Diving Numbers Needed: As I work on team assignments, I would like coaches to email how many divers plan to participate in the regional diving meets Oct. 2. Email your numbers to me at [email protected].

Team Photos Needed: I have enjoyed seeing the team photos of each qualifying team on the video board at the state tournament grand march. Please email your team photo to meprior to the regional meet so I can begin getting those ready for the state meet.

Athletic Tape: A reminder that tape may be used by a swimmer to treat a documented medical condition. The referee must be presented signed documentation from an appropriate health care professional before permitting the athlete to compete.

Para-Swimming: A reminder that the IGHSAU has established a para-swimming program designed to allow individuals who require the use of a wheelchair the opportunity to become involved in interscholastic sports. The IGHSAU will offer competition in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and, beginning this year, the 100 backstroke. If you have an individual that is eligible to compete at regionals in the para-swimming division, please let me know so I can set up the event in the entry lists.

Suit Coverage: Although there have not been as many issues as in past years, a reminder needs to be made about suit coverage. The rule book states that “Females shall wear suits which cover the buttocks and breasts and shall not extend beyond the shoulders or below the top of the kneecap, nor cover the neck.”  Officials have been directed to address any uniform issues with the head coach, not the athlete in question. Coaches, please be proactive with your athletes on suit coverage and, if an official asks you to address a uniform issue, please do so.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions. Another memo will be forthcoming once regional team assignments have been posted. Good luck the rest of the regular season.
