Maia Bumgardner of Waukee is a varsity swimmer who battles cystic fibrosis. She works incredibly hard during practices trying to get better as well as a form of CF therapy, knowing that swimming is literally saving her life.
Megan Ginsberg of Iowa City West always thinks of others before herself. After losing her brother to a sudden illness and overcoming acoustic neuroma herself, she continues to hold her head high through adversity.

Camryn overcame health complications at a young age and has qualified for state softball three years in her varsity career.
Kaitlyn Van Der Swaag has spent most of her life on the softball diamond. Since 4th grade, she has been pitching and playing the infield. She also excelled on the court as a volleyball player.
Brooke Anderson overcame a diagnosis of Graves' disease to compete as a varsity golfer after medical professionals recommended she not participate in contact sports for three to five years.
Ellie will be a sophomore at Sibley-Ocheyedan High School and is actively involved in choir, band, and color guard in addition to her commitment as a student-athlete.
Morgan Krug is a graduating senior of Dubuque Hempstead High School and is in her fifth year on the varsity softball team. In addition, she played four seasons of basketball and two years of volleyball.

Welcome to the IGHSAU blog site. We will periodically publish news items and stories that relate to the Iowa Girl and our activities. Our first blog post features one of the most legendary teams in Iowa Girls’ High School Basketball history: the 1968 Union-Whitten girls basketball team. The 1968 Cobras were led by six-on-six scoring legend Denise Long. The Cobras are being recognized at the 2018 Girls State Basketball Tournament as this year’s Honor Team. The following story was written by Chuck Schoffner in honor of the 50th anniversary of their thrilling state championship game victory.
