More than 9,000 Iowa girls currently participate in track and field, which was sanctioned in 1962. The season begins with first practice and competition taking place on February 19. There are four classes of girls high school track and field. The largest 48 schools compete in 4A, the next 64 schools compete in 3A, the next 96 compete in 2A and the remaining compete in 1A. State qualifying meets are held May 9, and the Iowa Girls High School State Track and Field Meet is held for all classes May 16-18 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
