Decorah has wrapped up the team title in a state wrestling tournament session that produced some major upsets.

The Vikings, who have led throughout the tournament, head into the final session tonight with 132 points, an overwhelming lead over the rest of the field. East Buchanan is second with 94 points and is followed by Raccoon River-Northwest with 92, Ankeny with 84 and Waverly-Shell Rock and Lewis Central with 83 each. Waverly-Shell Rock won last year’s team title.

Decorah will have two wrestlers in tonight’s finals after winning their semifinal matches – Chloe Sheffield at 100 pounds and defending champion Naomi Simon at 170.

Simon has pinned her way to the championship match, racking up four in just 5:05. Sheffield faces a major challenge in her title bid, a match against defending champion Katie Biscoglia of RR-NW. Biscoglia is 49-0 with 35 pins.

East Buchanan has racked up most of its points in the wrestlebacks. The Buccaneers don’t have anyone going for a championship, but they picked up a seventh-place finish in the afternoon session and they have three others who could finish as high as third.

Biscoglia is RR-NW’s only finalist. Lewis Central and Waverly-Shell Rock each have two in the finals, including defending champion Kiara Djoumessi of Waverly-Shell Rock at 140. Ankeny has one finalist and she got there with a stunning victory.

Fifth-seeded Haylee McGrew pinned defending champion Skylar Slade of Southeast Polk in the semifinals at 155, handing Slade her first loss in 96 high school matches. Slade bounced back with a 32-second pin in her consolation match and will try for third tonight.

McGrew will face second-seeded Nicole Olson of Missouri Valley in the finals.

In another upset, freshman Bella Miller of Wahlert Catholic beat defending champion Maeley Elsbury of South Tama with a takedown in overtime.

Chariton’s Leah Chandler, who entered the tournament with a 9-4 record, is the lowest seeded wrester in the finals -- No. 14 at 120. She’ll face fourth-seeded Camille Schult of Waverly-Shell Rock.

Chandler beat second-seeded Bree Swenson of Vinton-Shellsburg in the semifinals. Schult advanced with a victory over ninth-seeded Apryl Halsor of Cedar Falls, who had upset returning champion Abigail Meyrer of Pleasant Valley in the quarterfinals.

One other double-digit seed made it to the championship round – No. 10 Colbie Tenborg of Saydel at 130. She’ll go against eighth-seeded Adison Musser of Anamosa.
