Weekly Training Tip #9 - Push Press
Push press is an explosive over head press movement that emphasizes extension of the hips. In the movement the athlete transitions hip extension upward to an overhead extension of the bar. While we use our arms for lockout position, the goal of the movement is explosiveness from a hip hinge position. We see a similar hip movement commonly in jumps, especially when an athlete is on the move and is unable to perform a full pre-load for the jump. Push press enhances the power the athlete can produce from that hip hinge position while helping improve jump heights in these scenarios. Push press is a great exercise selection to incorporate with volleyball strength and conditioning programs in season and off season.
